How to Customize Form Design and Branding on Typeform
Open your form, click Design in the toolbar, then select or create a theme to customize colors, fonts, logos, and backgrounds. Save your changes to apply the theme form-wide. Most users complete basic branding in 15-30 minutes.
Prerequisites
- Active Typeform account (Plus plan or higher for logos and advanced branding)
- Form already created in your Workspace
- Brand assets ready: logo (PNG/SVG, under 2MB), hex color codes, and optimized images
- Desktop browser for best editing experience
Step-by-Step Instructions
Open your form and access the Design tab
Navigate to your Typeform Workspace and select the specific form you want to customize. In the top toolbar of the form editor, click Design to enter the customization area where all branding and visual options are available.
Apply or create a theme
In the Design panel, locate the Themes section. You have two options: select a pre-made theme from the Gallery by clicking the Gallery button to browse templates, or click the + button under Themes to create a custom theme (which will be named 'My new theme' by default).
Customize question and answer text colors
Within the theme editor, navigate to the Font tab to adjust colors for question text and answer text. Click on the color picker to select from a palette or enter a hex code directly (for example, #000000 for black or #FF5733 for a custom brand color). Use neutral grays and blacks for text to ensure readability.
Customize button styles and colors
In the Buttons tab, adjust colors for buttons and button text. You can also modify button styles such as rounded corners (default radius is 8px) and transparency settings. Ensure button colors contrast well with your background for accessibility.
Set the background color or image
Navigate to the Background tab to change the background color or upload a background image. For solid colors, use the color picker or enter a hex code. For images, click + Add image to upload a file, then configure brightness (range -100 to 100, default 0) and scaling options (Cover, Contain, or Fill). Note that background images are different from question images added in the Create panel.
Choose or upload a font
Select a font from Typeform's font library (default is typically a sans-serif like Inter) or upload a custom font if your plan supports it. Apply your chosen font to all text elements for visual consistency across the form.
Add a brand logo (Plus plans and above)
Click the logo upload area in the theme editor (available on Plus plans or higher). Upload a PNG or SVG file with a recommended size of 200x50px and a transparent background. The logo will be positioned at the top of your form and scales automatically to fit different screen sizes.
Preview your design on different devices
Use the mobile and desktop preview toggles in the Design panel to check how your form looks on different screen sizes. Elements auto-scale automatically, so no manual size or position adjustments are needed for boxes or buttons. Test responsiveness early to catch any layout issues.
Save your changes
Click Save changes (or Save) in the Design panel to apply the theme form-wide. Your saved theme is personal by default, but you can add it to a Brand kit in organization settings for team-wide sharing and consistency.
Test your live form
After saving, preview or publish your form to test how the design appears in the live version. Verify that all colors, fonts, logos, and backgrounds display correctly and that the form functions properly with any logic or branching rules you have set up.
Common Issues & Troubleshooting
Changes are not saving or edits are lost
Always click Save changes explicitly after making adjustments. Auto-save is unreliable, so manually save to ensure your edits are preserved.
Background image is not loading or appears blurry
Optimize your image file size (compress via image resizers) and ensure the file is under 2MB. Check that the brightness and scaling settings are appropriate for your image.
Logo or images appear misaligned on mobile devices
Use the mobile preview toggle to check alignment before publishing. Ensure your logo is the recommended 200x50px size with a transparent background for proper scaling.
Premium themes cannot be applied or edited
Premium themes require a Plus plan or above. If you are on a Free or Basic plan, you can test Premium themes but must remove them before publishing your form.
Text is difficult to read against the background
Increase contrast by choosing darker text colors for light backgrounds and lighter text colors for dark backgrounds. Adjust background brightness if using an image to improve text readability.
